Baby Driver (2017)
Edgar Wright directed Shaun of the Dead. Since that triumph he has not hit a new level. Baby Driver continues this trend. Its a nice movie done well. Super cast and a story that I have seen a thousand times before made almost fresh.
Ansel Elgrot gradually wins you over. Similar for Lily James, this is a girl that everyone watching the movie could fall in love with, and that is cinematic magic.
You have seen this movie, repeat a thousand times before. Its worth the one more time. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 93%. It has generally rave reviews. I call hype and hubris but still give this a solid rating
3.1 for those that love skid marks stars

Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017)
The original Starship Troopers based upon the Robert Heinlein juvenile novel was IMHO a Orwellian Masterpiece.
I could be wrong but this is the first Anime movie I have ever watched to the end. Maybe it was Casper van Dien doing the Johnny Rico voice, or maybe it was the cynical spot on writing, whatever I really dug this cartoon.
If you think Orwell was underselling the problem watch this movie.

Kidnapped (2017)
A terrible movie that would not even get green lighted as a Criminal Minds episode saved from total lameness by Haley Berry. In the end she makes you care. If you have nothing to watch it will do fine.
Two point 5 pointless stars.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Very close to wanting that time back, it was a crime. It was a lazy cash in on a good concept that went bad. I am just about done with Chris Pratt.
Anyone who gave this movie a good review is on the payroll of the man
or just no discriminating.
two stars for visual ok

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Guinevere
After finishing the movie I was not sure she was Guinevere. For some inexplicable reason Guy Ritchie decided there should be no romance between Guinevere and Arthur in his telling of the Sword in the Stone Legend.
The plot borrows heavily from the first testament and this makes it the most original take on a well told tale. I did not realize without research that Jax Teller from Sons of Anarchy was playing Arthur. I knew he looked familiar and he nailed this role. Jude Law was serviceable as the villain. I also liked Little Finger from GOT as the Bill.
The action scenes and special effects were grade A. The cinematography was David Lean like.
Therefore its very surprising this version bombed. Rotten Tomatoes gave it only 28% which leads me to conclude critics just hate this story. The 2004 Clive Owen edition only got 28%. So how does Excalibur (1981) get 82%? With a little romance this movie would have been a blockbuster.

The Attraction (2017) Russia
A Russian sci fi movie delving into the human condition using an intergalactic instrument. This was a terrific movie no matter the weird dialogue via subtitles.
Production and story wise as good as anything Hollywood can deliver.
IMDb gave it 53%. I will add 25 points to that. It was better than Star Trek Beyond.
3.8 stars
Alien Covenant (2017)
Not Ripley! |
Aside from unbelievable bio hazard protocol, the movie was documentary like in its reality.
Add Tony Scott to the list of visionaries screaming, do not seek the singularity! Rotten Tomatoes gave it 71%. Chestbursting fail.

Passengers (2017)
Spear a Norwegian save a whale. This seems to be the critical reaction to Mortyl Tylden's movie. He did the fantastic Imitation Game and if you liked that movie this one is right there. Casting is suspect, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have zero chemistry. If this choice had been better this movie would have been a blockbuster. Its great sci fi and despite all the warts generates real anxiety. It asks lots of heavy questions and gives dopey answers, but is the world not just like that. Rotten Tomatoes was at 31% well I give global warming to that.

Live by night (2017)
A calm sea of normality with a furious propeller of progressive thought churning beneath the surface. Black and white and morality and everything is addressed
its a sleeper that could make you unconscious if you were thinkingaboot it.
Its not a great gangster movie like Goodfellas, its pedestrian in its delivery but
world class in its themes.
Zoe Sleanda deserves and Oscar for portraying a white wife.
Its a movie that hits you later hard.
Five Stars despite the flaws of execution

War on Everyone (2016)
Eric from True Blood and Micheal Pena are wacky wild and crazy cops. This movie is on the suspended disbelief bubble for the first third and then snaps into a surrealistic wonderland. A lot of fun and often clever. I especially enjoyed Caleb Landry Jones in his homage to Dirty Harry. Rotten tomatoes was at 61%.

The Girl With All the Gifts
Certainly the Girl with all the Gifts is the most important Zombie movie since 28 Days later. It is in many respects a continuation of that universe. Both of the 29 weeks movies are better, but the Girl does add new layers to the Zombie Universe. Rotten Tomatoes was more genrous than me, no matter for Zombies fans this is brains.
Three point 9 hungry stars
