The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Surprisingly this movie is based upon a short story written by Stephen King. What makes it surprising is there are no elements of the supernatural present, and it may be King’s finest bit of storytelling.  Frank Darabont the director is now well known as the director of the first season of The Walking Dead, and other Stephen King movies. This was his first movie and although it was critically acclaimed it was a box office dud. What the heck was wrong with people in 1994? Today it’s a universally loved movie by all who have seen it. It’s a prison movie. Tim Robbins is the fish out of water lead and Morgan Freeman his prison mentor. The conclusion is brilliant, uplifting and soul satisfying, a religious experience. Best prison movie and best drama without stooping to maudlin.

Five Stars
